About the Tracker
Using Housing Court Data from the New York State Office of Court Administration and records from the New York City Department of Finance, our tracker aggregates de-identified data on all cases in which a landlord has formally filed to evict a tenant. The tracker also displays warrants for eviction issued or executed by the court system. The tool includes maps and figures that can be used to see trends over time.
NYC's Eviction Filings
Eviction data at the ZIP Code level is publicly available and released on a monthly basis. The map to the right shows filings through 2024 by Community Districts in New York City.

Methodology
For detailed information on the NYU Furman’s Centers methods for collecting, integrating, managing and presenting the data, see below.
Housing Court Data: The New York State Office of Court Administration collects information on all cases filed within civil courts using the Universal Case Management System for Local Civil Courts. The Furman Center processes a de-identified version of these data for landlord-tenant cases filed in New York City housing courts. The dataset contains the filing date, court of filing, basis of claim (non-payment or holdover), and all appearances before the court. The de-identified version provides only the ZIP Code of the property.
Rental Unit Counts: The New York City Department of Finance assess each property in the city and records information such as the number of housing units. Using Real Property Assessment Data (RPAD) for 2018 and earlier and Property Tax System for 2019 and 2020, we estimate the number of rental units. Combining this with data from NYCHA, we are able to estimate the number of private, NYCHA, and total rental units in a given geography.
Rental Properties
All: Cases arising from any rental housing except for those flagged as condo/co-op.
Private: Cases arising from any rental housing not flagged as NYCHA or condo/co-op.
NYCHA: Cases arising from NYCHA properties, as flagged in the data.
Type of Eviction
All: All eviction cases.
Non-Payment: Eviction cases arising due to the non-payment of rent.
Holdover: Eviction cases arising due to some issue other than the non-payment of rent (e.g., violating lease term, staying past the lease’s expiration).
Indicators
Filings: The total number of eviction cases, minus cases flagged as condo/co-op, matching the property and case type selected.
Amount Sought: The amount the landlord claimed is due when filing.
Answer Rate: The share of all filings, minus cases flagged as condo/co-op and matching the property and case type selected, where at least one tenant responded.
Representation Rate: The share of all filings, minus cases flagged as condo/co-op and matching the property and case type selected, where at least one tenant has legal representation.
Motions to Show Cause: A motion made by a tenant to stop or reverse an eviction.
Outstanding Warrants: Warrants for eviction that were issued by the court but not yet executed.
Executed Warrants: Warrants that have been executed by a city marshal or sheriff.
