The majority of housing units in New York City’s floodplain are in multifamily buildings.

Nearly 90 percent of the multifamily rental buildings in the floodplain were built before 1983, when New York City added flood-resistant construction standards. These buildings may be particularly vulnerable to flooding and at risk of escalating flood insurance premiums.

Over 270,000 residential buildings containing more than 1 million housing units are in New York City’s three evacuation zones. While Sandy reached 76,000 buildings, the number of units that could be jeopardized by a higher category hurricane would be three times higher.
