DEMOGRAPHICS
In the 2017-18 school year, there were about 18,309 students in District 29. 11.6% of the student population identified as Asian, 69.9% identified as Black, 13.3% identified as Hispanic, and 1.4% identified as white. The average Economic Needs Index (ENI) was 0.62 and 10.4% of students were in temporary housing. Additionally, 13.5% of public elementary school students attended charter schools and 86.5% attended traditional public schools.

RACIAL/ETHNIC DIVERSITY IN SCHOOLS
In the 2017-18 school year, 4.1% of all public elementary school students attended Black-Hispanic schools, 28.1% attended other categories of racially/ethnically diverse schools, and 67.8% of students attended predominantly one-group schools. These patterns varied by racial/ethnic group. Asian students were most likely to attend Hispanic-Asian schools, Black students were most likely to attend predominately Black schools, Hispanic students were most likely to attend predominately Black school, and white students were most likely to attend predominately Black schools.

Furthermore, Black-Hispanic schools had, on average, the highest share of students in temporary housing while Black-Asian schools had the lowest (25.6% and 5.5% respectively). Black-Hispanic schools had the highest ENI (0.81) and predominately Black schools had the lowest ENI (0.57).

THE STABILITY OF RACIALLY/ETHNICALLY DIVERSE SCHOOLS
Between the 2005-06 school year and the 2017-18 school year, 40.0% of diverse schools remained in the same category. Hispanic-Asian schools were the most likely to remain in the same diverse school category during this time period. Additionally, across all diverse schools, the Asian share increased by 5.8 percentage points, the Black share decreased by 12.3 percentage points, the Hispanic share decreased by 0.4 percentage points, and the white share decreased by 0.2 percentage points.
